Toni and her two boys were living in an unhealthy environment with mold issues in every room. The landlord continued to just paint over the areas never eradicating the real problem. All three family members suffer with complications from asthma. Toni also could not let the boys play outside because they were in an unsafe neighborhood. Alonso and Tony spent all their time away from school inside an apartment full of mold. It was what they could afford.
Toni was working full time while going to school so she could better her situation and improve life for her boys. When asked how she would manage work, school and complete her required “sweat-equity” hours, Toni’s response was an adamant, “There is no choice. I have to do this, to make life better for my boys. This is for my family. This is for my sons.” We are working to make her wish, and the hopes of her two boys, come true this spring. Her youngest son’s hope was a home close to his school. The home we are building for Toni happens to be right across the street from his school. Studies have shown children who live in their own home do better in school and socially.
With help from the Habitat program, hard work, and careful budgeting Toni’s family will a have clean, decent, place to live and Toni will have reduced her monthly housing costs empowering her to become a better provider for her boys.
